Confirmation

7th and 8th Grade Confirmation

What Will Your Child Be Taught?

The aim of the confirmation course is to help children learn to know and understand the main teachings of the Christian faith so that they can apply them to their lives. Please note: the children do not learn all there is to know about the Christian faith; none of us can ever stop learning. Confirmation is only one stage in a lifelong process of Christian education.

The confirmation class will be using a learning resource called Growing as God’s People. The very first chapter in this book is called: ‘Always Growing’ and the last chapter has the title: ‘Keep on Growing’. The concept of ‘Growing’ has been chosen as the theme of this course because this expresses what we trust will happen through the power of the Holy Spirit – namely, that the confirmation students will grow:

♦ in knowing and confessing the Christian faith as their own

♦ in knowing Jesus as their Lord and in living as members of God’s family

♦ in appreciating and faithfully using God’s Word and the Sacraments

♦ in sharing in the worship and work of the Christian congregation.

In the 40 chapters of the book, the main teachings of the Bible are set out. This is the spiritual food your child needs in order to grow as God’s child.

Growing as God’s People is based on the Small Catechism which Dr. Martin Luther wrote to help children know and understand the main teachings of the Bible. Your child will learn the following chief parts of Christian doctrine:

 ♦ The Ten Commandments

 ♦ The Apostles’ Creed

 ♦ The Lord’s Prayer

 ♦ The Sacrament of Baptism

♦ The Sacrament of the Altar

♦ The Office of the Keys

7th Grade Confirmation is held on Wednesdays from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. in the Rose Room of Grace Lutheran Church.

8th Grade Confirmation is held on Wednesdays from 4:30 until 5:30 p.m in the Rose Room of Grace Lutheran Church.

Each confirmation student is required to complete 10 worship notes and 4 servant projects each year.

During the season of Lent – there will be no formal class sessions; however each student is to meet with their mentor to complete six packets to discuss during each Lenten supper.
